Why Pollsters are Wrong, Lobbyists Win, and Cartels Lose

Seminar by David K. Levine, European University Institute

We study the behavior of large groups that self-organize to overcome public goods problems through peer monitoring and punishment. We examine political contests such as voting and lobbying to see why smaller groups are effective at lobbying but not voting. We also examine markets and ask why if groups large in absolute size can be effective at lobbying they are not so effective at forming cartels.
