  Topic and Supervisor Choice

Timeline for online process of choosing a dissertation topic and supervisor for student enrolled in 2019/20:
- from Monday, 15 February 2021: the thesis proposals will be available in the “Aree riservate“ of our website;
- from Monday, 1 March 2021: the thesis proposals will be eligible.

Students who have “completed” at least 80 CFU can start the online process of choosing a dissertation topic (only for the 2018/19 cohort and till the end of year 2020 the threshold is 70 CFU, see here Credits are “completed” if a passing grade is registered on Uniweb (even if the process is not formally finalized) and the student does not refuse the grade.

Choice of topics: Students have to choose in preference order one to three topics of interest. Chosen topics can be from the same or different supervisors. Each request has to be accompanied by a brief motivation.  Students can (but are not obliged) to contact potential supervisors before choosing the topics to discuss with them. Once the student’s choices are confirmed, the system will notify the supervisor responsible for the first ranked topic. The chosen supervisor within a maximum of 15 days must confirm or refuse (indicating why) the match with the student. The system will send an email to the student with the outcome of the process. In case the first match is refused, the system will automatically send an email to the supervisor of the second ranked topic. The process is similar if also the second choice is refused. If all three choices of the student are refused, then the student must start the process from the beginning and rank one to three new topics.   

The matching between the student and supervisor is confirmed only when the supervisor agrees to supervise a topic given the above described process. 

There is no deadline for completing the thesis.

  Graduation Application

Step 1: Check the accuracy of your “Study Plan”. Responsible office: Segreteria didattica dSEA (via Bassi 1)

Once you apply for graduation it is not possible to modify your study plan. Hence, it is important that you check your study plan before applying for graduation. Make sure that your study plan is complete, and its status is “Approved”. Only exams present in your study plan (and with the relevant icon on your online booklet) are considered for the 120CFU calculation and your average. In case your study plan is not updated, follow the relevant timescale and process for updating it see here.

Step 2: Apply for Graduation. Responsible office: Ufficio Carriere Studenti (lungargine Piovego 2/3)

You need to apply for graduation on Uniweb following the corresponding deadlines. The detailed guidelines are here:

First, you will need to insert the title of your thesis and the details of the supervisor via Uniweb. You will need to wait for your supervisor to approve the inserted details. Once s/he approves these details you can proceed with the proper “Graduation Application”. The process is complete with the online payment of the 16 Euro fee. In case of problems, contact:

Cancelling your Graduation Application: If after completing the application you decide to postpone your graduation, you must enter Uniweb and cancel your submitted application. You must also inform the department’s responsible office via email at . If you fail to cancel your application on time this will prevent you from graduation in the subsequent sessions. 

  Degree (credit) Completion

In order to graduate in the chosen session, you must have “completed” all the credits necessary to graduate by the corresponding deadline. Here, “completed” requires that the grades have been approved and signed on Uniweb by the professor in their final and permanent form (Italian keyword is that “verbalizzazione” has been finalized). If by the deadline you cannot prove the degree completion you must wait for graduation in the subsequent period.

  Submission of Thesis and Accompanying Documents, Requirements and Layout.

Requirements and Layout

  • Line spacing: 1.5
  • Margins: 2 cm of lower, upper, and right margin. 3 cm of left margin.
  • Font: Times New Roman 12.

You are expected to write a thesis of roughly 80 pages.

For students in BA (Business Administration) and MEF (Economics and Finance) matriculated after A.Y. 2013/14 and for all students in EI (Entrepreneurship and Innovation), the thesis must be written in English.

For all other students the thesis language is Italian. If the student with the supervisor’s agreement decides to submit the thesis in another language than Italian, the student must include an abstract in Italian and the supervisor must send a request to the Programme Director (via email to ) prior to the thesis submission deadline motivating such choice.

You must include a “Declaration of Originality” after the cover page and before the index page. The required text is part of the cover page provided below. The student must declare that this work is original and of her/his own and that this work has not been fully or partially submitted previously in any other Italian of foreign university for assessment purposes.

All material and references used during the thesis elaboration must be cited and referred in the main text and included in a separate section “Bibliographical References”.

The last page of the thesis must be a “confidentiality commitment” (“impegno di riservatezza [download form])” where the student commits to use the information obtained during the thesis elaboration only for the thesis purposes.

Cover page A ( To be used when the supervisor is a member of the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Padova, or an external supervisor.

Cover page B ( To be used when the supervisor is a member of the University of Padova but NOT of the Department of Economics and Management. The student must complete the Department of the supervisor after consulting it on the university’s website: 

Thesis Title

The title presented on Uniweb when applying for graduation as approved by the supervisor must be reported on the cover page. If the title is updated after the application on Uniweb the supervisor must send an email from her/his unipd email account to indicating: name, surname, student id number, new title in Italian, new title in English. Colleagues in the corresponding office will update the title.    

Thesis Submission

From the autumn 2020 session, complying with measures for containment of the health emergency, the thesis will be submitted exclusively online. There is no need to submit a printed copy.

The file to upload must have the following characteristics:
PDF Format, maximum 40 MB (you can go to and read the instructions provided by the University: “Istruzioni per produrre un documento PDF/A accessibile”).
The file name should be: Surname_Name.pdf.
The first page is the Cover page. See above the paragraph "Cover page" to download the pre-filled model.
The last page of the document must consist of the confidentiality commitment [download the form here].
By filling in the confidentiality commitment, the student undertakes to use the information he or she may have during the production of his or her dissertation only for the production of the thesis. Compilation of the confidentiality commitment is mandatory for all students.

Students must upload their thesis by the mentioned deadline in two platforms:

In Uniweb, in the section dedicated to “Diploma attainment” ("Conseguimento titolo" in Italian). 
Once you have completed your “Thesis title entry process”, the system will display the “Diploma attainment application” button ("Procedi con il Processo di completamento tesi" in Italian). In “Gestion of the attached thesis” ("Gestione allegato definitivo tesi" in Italian) the students will upload their thesis, which will then be approved by the teacher for submission to the Student Careers Office and addition into the student file. 
In the Uniweb field “Attachment name” ("Nome dell’allegato"in Italian) the student must enter: Surname First Name.

On the page the university provides the guidelines for uploading the file (in Italian “Linee Guida Upload documento definitivo per la prova finale”).

On the dSEA website, through the same procedure used to select the supervisor and the topic (link:

A .pdf copy, without the “confidentiality commitment” (“impegno di riservatezza"), must also be sent to the library via email at (email subject: "Consegna tesi").
The digital version will be archived in the library. Students must present on Moodle the “thesis consent form” (Italian keyword: “liberatorie SBA”) regarding the publication of the thesis on the “Padua Thesis” portal and the consultation or not of their thesis. Uploading this consent form is compulsory, check the deadlines indicated on the calendar.

The relevant forms and instructions can be found online on Moodle: “ > Servizi agli studenti > Servizi alla didattica > Consegna documentazione laureandi (login with your Single Sign On credentials)”.

  Thesis Defence Schedule and Examination Committee

The exact schedule is available at least one week before the first day of graduation. The schedule will be available at the department’s website (Didattica > News)

In the calendar, the student can also consult the exam committee member(s) assigned to her/his thesis  (Italian keyword: “controrelatore”). Students must send to this assigned committee member a .pdf copy of their thesis via email as soon as the calendars are known.

  Thesis Defence and Final Grade

All July 2020 graduations will take place exclusively online.

The student must defend her/his thesis in the presence of committee of at least five members, among whom the supervisor (Italian keyword: “relatore”) and the member assigned to this thesis (Italian keyword: “controrelatore”). The student can use Powerpoint slides. The defence lasts approximately 25 minutes and is followed by the President of the commision communication the final grade of the degree and declaring its completion.

  Diploma and Academic Transcripts

As graduations are online, the Diploma delivery cannot take place at the day of the graduation.

The Diplomas will be available once the graduation session ends (i.e., for students graduating in December 2020 diplomas are expected to be available in the end of January 2021). You can check details regarding the process at To pick up your diploma or obtain further information contact the “Diploma Office - Sportello Diplomi” of the “Ufficio Carriere Studenti” (Lungargine Piovego 2/3, tel. +39 049 827 3131).

It will also be possible to download via Uniweb a few days after the graduation a degree certificate including the academic transcript and the final grade. The responsible office is the “Ufficio Carriere Studenti” and in Uniweb you have to search for “Autodichiarazioni”. After graduation you will also receive an email (from platform “Bestr”) to obtain the “Open Badge” and your “Digital Certificate”. The digital certificate permits you to prove the originality of your degree.

Be careful and do not delete the email you receive from them. You will not be able to access the platform otherwise.
