Board Gender Diversity and Resilience of European Firms

Scientific Responsible: ELISA TOSETTI

Project objectives: This project aims to investigate the causal impact of gender diversity on boards of directors on the resilience of European SMEs, focusing on several strategic aspects: the risk of insolvency during times of crisis, the internationalization attitude of a company, and its environmental performance. To achieve these objectives, we will use data containing information on a large number of firms, both publicly listed and privately held, based in Italy and the UK, from 2015 to 2022. To estimate the causal impact of diversity on boards of directors on our key variables, we will adopt a quasi-experimental approach and employ a set of statistical tools derived from recent literature on panel data, utilizing difference-in-differences and instrumental variables approaches, while also considering potential observed and unobserved spatial spillover effects.
