Educational stages, choices, achievement and long-run outcomes
Scientific Responsible: MARCO BERTONI
Project objectives: The central role of human capital in economic growth is widely acknowledged by most economists. Although skills development is a continuous process throughout life, the greatest investments occur during formal education. Education is a multi-stage process: students progress from primary education—where they develop basic skills following a common curriculum—to secondary education, where differentiation begins to play a role. They then choose whether to continue to higher education, and some will attend postgraduate education. This project will empirically investigate the determinants of choices and outcomes at various stages of compulsory and post-compulsory education, as well as their consequences for labor market outcomes. We will use data from Italy, Denmark, England, and Australia, and we will employ modern techniques for causal inference. The results will provide evidence on the interaction between different inputs in education and policy recommendations.
