Job Opening: Postdoctoral Position in Public Finance and Macroeconomics

The Department of Economics and Management (DSEA) of the University of Padova invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Public Finance and Macroeconomics. The position is for two years and is funded by the STARS Grant 2021 awarded for the project “Generationally Sustainable Institutions”.


Research Project

The project is aimed at designing optimal institutions for the enforcement of sustainable intergenerational policies, with special focus on the sustainability of social security, public debt, and natural resources. Its goal is threefold: 1) to provide a new theoretical framework for characterizing generationally sustainable institutions; 2) to develop a quantitative framework and numerical methods to analyse the welfare implications of optimal policies; and 3) to deliver fiscal rules for actual policy making. The ideal candidate will:

- have a PhD in economics or will be close to completion;
- be an independent researcher with a promising research agenda;
- have a strong background in macroeconomics, both theoretical and quantitative; - have expertise in working with numerical programming methods.


Responsibilities and Opportunities

The postdoc’s primary responsibility is to conduct research in public finance and macroeconomics. He/she will be expected to make contributions to the project’s overall research agenda by developing and solving theoretical and quantitative models. A key aim of the position is also to help the candidate develop and improve his/her independent research profile and should serve as a stepping stone to a future position as Assistant Professor (or equivalent) at an international research institution.


Terms of Employment

The gross salary for the grant holder is 26,000 euros per year. The salary is exempt of taxation but subject to pension contributions. The monthly net salary is approximately equal to 1,900 euros. The position has no teaching or administrative duties. Conditional on approval by the DSEA, it may be possible for the candidate to teach courses in the Master’s or PhD track in economics (where courses are taught in English). Research funds for travels and equipment will also be provided. Knowledge of Italian is not required for the position.
