Title:  "Estimating switching costs in the Italian energy market" joint with F. Manenti and P. Valbonesi

Abstract:
The Italian energy market is characterized by the presence of both regulated and market-based prices. Switching rates from the regulated regime to energy provides in the free market are still low. As regulated prices will likely be phased out by July 2020, the regulator aims at fastening switching rates and decrease consumer inertia. By means of a theoretical model, in this work we analyze the optimal strategy of energy providers in the free market when a regulated price exists. Consequently, starting from theoretical predictions and using data of the Italian energy market, we estimate costs from switching to the free market. This would allow to analyze switching costs determinants and tailor policies to reduce them.
